It’s Yelp Denver’s one year anniversary and we’re throwing one helluva party to celebrate. Local bands Able Archer, The Hollyfelds and The Knew will provide your aural entertainment downstairs at the Skylark Lounge while DJ Savior Breath entertains the dancing masses upstairs in the Pair O’ Dice Pool Room on Saturday, May 9th starting at 8 pm. If you have a Yelp account (sign up is free at yelp.com) you can RSVP to [email protected] with your full name, your Yelp URL and a guests name for free drinks from Great Divide Brewery, Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and Dr. McGillicuddy’s from 8 pm – 11 pm. Plus, Gigbot will be there with their epic photobooth, Luxe Salon will be providing rock and roll hairstyles free of charge and Mermaids Pie and Bakery House will be sprinkling the venue with their sweet cakes and cupcakes.

Coloradoan (he’s really from South Africa, but for all intents and purposes, the guy rests his head to sleep here) is exploding with lots of great news. The punk folkie (he style was dubbed  punk folk by the Indigo Girls) has a new album on the burner and a tour that starts with his album release party in Boulder. First on tap for Isakov is a KBCO Studio C appearance and a May 15th CD release show at Boulder, Colorado’s Fox Theatre.  Look for the multi-instrumentalist on the road w/Brandi Carlile (she also makes an appearance on the record doing a Leonard Cohen Cover). Call me crazy, but the new album cover bears a striking resemblance to a children’s book that just won the John Newbery award. The name of the new release  to hit the streets May 19th is, This Empty Northern Hemisphere.

These United States ::: Hillbilly Prom @ Hi-Dive ::: 03.27.09

After many missed opportunities, I have finally gotten a chance to see one of DC’s best! The group plays like a rollicking bar band without the abrasive chicken wire for protection. The guys played to a hillbilly crazed crowed and the stage was smaller than the band. It contained them a bit, but the guys played a very appropriate Tom Petty cover, American Girl, that sent everybody into a mass frenzy. The night was a resounding success and make sure you catch TUS on tour.

The Lurleens (a.k.a. The Hollyfelds) ::: Hillbilly Prom @ Hi-Dive ::: 03.27.09

He-Haw came alive Friday night in the form of the Hollyfelds. The Denver group have taken the last name of one of the characters from one of my favorite 80’s movies, Real Genius. The weird creepy guy named Lazlo Hollyfeld. He lived in the dorm closet of the main character and came in and out as he pleased. The group scores immediate points for that alone. The group didn’t go the route of 80’s music, but instead, they went the way of Lorretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, and the Kentucky Headhunters. The group will be releasing their EP, Black Heart Blue, and they will be having a release party this Friday! (photo cred: Gigbot)

I know y’all have snow boots! Don’t even act! Plus, I have it on good word, that the Lurleens are responsible for Willie Nelson’s marijuana habit.

FEATURING THESE UNITED STATES

RSVP

The Denver folk will be bringing a prom unlike any prom that you went to in high school. As if you needed any incentive going to see These United States, but really? There will be a Hillbilly Prom. This means you can wear that tuxedo shirt you’ve been putting off for such a long time, or that cake dress you call a prom dress with bad makeup, bright red lipstick, and fluffed hair (compliments of Aqua Net). We hope to see you there! BTW, The Lurleens are not meant to be trifled with. About The Lurleens:

Lurleens ruled the charts during the ‘60s and ‘70s, racking up over 70 hits as a solo artist and a duet partner.

With an impoverished upbringing, a devoted yet troubled marriage, chronic illness and exhaustion due to her hectic pace, and several tragedies through the years, Lurleen’s own life often provided the grist for her popular tunes. Her best-selling 1976 autobiography, Coal Miner’s Daughter, was made into a hit Oscar-winning film starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones.
