Wilco ::: Mission Ballroom ::: 11.19.19

Over the last decade, Wilco has been cruising in neutral over the last ten years.

Jeff Tweedy and company played things safe with releases like “The Whole Love,” “Star Wars,” and “Schmilco.”

And that’s okay. Not until the 2019 release of “Ode to Joy” has Wilco found themselves. Again. Very much like Tweedy’s memoir: “Let’s go (so we can get back).”

We find ourselves with a group that unselfishly shares the stage and celebrates their victories. Eleven releases into Wilco, the guys are at a point where they can easily fill a nearly three-hour set where fan-favorite songs get turned upsidedown until they’re unrecognizable. They’ve earned this right as a touring band to deconstruct their material.

Last night’s super sold-out Denver show toasted and solidified a crossover into the stratosphere of legacy rock acts. It’s easy for Wilco not to release any more new music, but 2019 was blessed with “Ode to Joy.”

The Mission Ballroom setlist included a healthy dose of material from the latest project from the proud sons of the Midwest starting the night off with a one-two punch of “Bright Leaves” and “Before Us.”

Catch Wilco on tour through the rest of the year and in Mexico this January.
