UMS 2019 Review

We’re still recovering from an amazing weekend full of great bands. Each year, the team at the UMS manages to top the previous year’s outing, and this year was no different. The lineup included a number of local and national Latinx bands, which was music to our ears(pun intended.) Below are some of our highlights from the UMS, along with pics:

Black Mountain – Our 2019 UMS started on a very loud note. If you had been walking along Broadway near the Goodwill stage, you would have been swallowed by the wall of sound from Canadian psych-rock band Black Mountain. Their guitars and voices weaved together with the light show for a powerful show. Black Mountain moved between new songs and their back catalog, as their fans cheered(equally loud)them on.

Izcalli – Izcalli, Denver’s premier Rock en Espanol band, closed out Night 1 of the UMS with a jam-packed, rowdy and raucous show at the Skylark Lounge. From their energy and their smiles, you would have never known that this was their second show of the evening(the first, an opening slot at the Levitt Pavillion).

Chicano Batman – Bardo Martinez and crew played an early evening show on the mainstage. Working their way through their deep catalog, Chicano Batman, the very essence of cool and calm, led the crowd their fun-filled, and energetic set.

Yves Tumor – Sean Bowie, aka Yves Tumor, played the antagonist during his set, asking the stage crew to shut down the video projections so that people could focus on the music, reminding the crowd that “we don’t fuck with the police”. His music, experimental R&B, was the perfect foil to his attitude.

Trujillo Co – Throughout Day 2, Mike Trujillo could be seen carrying a sign encouraging attendees to make the walk down to Moe’s, the furthest venue from the mainstage, because their set was not to be missed. Later that night, Mike and Leny Trujillo delivered on that promise: a played a concise, tight set of 90’s style jams for the crowd at Moe’s BBQ.
