Donald Glover shows mad range in “Atlanta”

It’s easy to forget that nearly seven years have passed since Donald Glover initially starred as mild mannered Troy Barnes from “Community” on NBC. In that time, Glover has moonlighted as a writer, rapper and actor. A renaissance man flexing his artistic skills much like what Bo Jackson did when he was playing football for the Raiders and baseball for the Kansas City Royals.

In the latest foray into television for Childish Gambino, Donald’s writing skills are front and center in the first episode of FX’s, “Atlanta.” Glover plays the show’s protagonist (Earn) in a damaged relationship that gave birth to a beautiful daughter. As our flawed leading character is further introduced, we find out that he squandered away an opportunity at a Ivy League school education in exchange for a miserable sales job at a bustling airport.

The central story in the first episode leads up to Earn making a savage attempt at repping his cousin Paper Boi’s burgeoning music career. We won’t give up the rest, but the show has our attention with it’s firm command of character development and a savage like zing for comedic relief.
