Bands that form as cast-offs from other bands are so iffy. Look at Velvet Revolver, Damn Yankees, Chickenfoot, or Audio Slave. I never liked STP, or cared for Soundgarden, but the collaborations won the crowds over, but their material seemed a bit forced. But one can make the case for the Dead Weather, the Raconteurs, Cream, the Traveling Wilburys, CSNY, Gorillaz ,the Highwaymen, and on and on. The trio w/the help of a fellow axeman that shall remain unnamed, except for the fact that he looked like a skinnier version of Kyle from Tenacious D, exhibited the expert chemistry of a band that has been around for years. They all knew what they wanted to do, and all contributed in cohesive ways that made for an organic experience not often felt at many shows. The musicianship is undeniable. John Paul Jones, Josh Homme, and Dave Grohl demonstrated that being a musician isn’t all business and people can do things just for the fun of it. The trio were all grins last night enjoying the fruits of the labor as they rocked the Fillmore stage in a way a raucous rock band should rock. John Paul Jones, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire, brought his infinite wisdom and experience as the final touch to what could be rock’s most glorious union. Dave Grohl did his best Keith Moon impression behind his drum set, going off on many solos, and rightfully so. The last time I remember seeing him back there was when he was on Mtv’s Unplugged w/Nirvana. I’m thoroughly convinced that Josh Homme should continue with his avian themed band names, but I have one suggestion. For the next band, I recommend an alt-country act, in the same spirit of Merle, and name it “the Wild Turkeys”. You know, after the bourbon….
