Okkervil River ::: Red Rocks ::: 07.03.09

Will Sheff gazed at the filling crowd at Red Rocks last Friday in amazement. Partly because the place was almost full and secondly, the clouds had broke and no rain was in sight. He stated that his mom had once been to Red Rocks back in the 60’s. At that time, a certain Mr. Jimmy Hendrix had graced the stage, and into the set the proud Austinites dove head first. Like any smaller band, playing such a historical venue such as Red Rock, they seemed a bit rattled with their equipment not cooperating, but after a couple of minutes, nerves became settled and the band started an hour set that made them seem like veterans of the bigger stage. Their act complimented Wilco in a way that made spectators in the audience pay attention for the duration of their set despite being unknown. Their brand of rock twang is only maturing with each album and it will only be a matter of time until Okkervil River starts doing concept albums or morphing their sound; even with the existence of Shearwater.

  1. Yay, Julio! awesome photos…thanks for the review of Okkervil and not just concentrating on Wilco like everybody else!

  2. Thanks! I was surprised by the strong response the crowd gave them. I hope that one of these days I can catch one of those solo Will Sheff shows or a smaller venue show for Okkervil River.
