Brett Dennen’s performance captivated established fans and curious bystanders. The California kid rocked out in full Dickie apparel, making you think he could of perhaps belonged to a gang. The young barefoot poet soothed his audience as well as his band mates, and perhaps the soothing came from the power of his barefeet. The back up band played with heart and soul producing tunes that shut eyelids and swayed hips. Dennen’s style implemented folk, country, soul, and a healthy touch of reggae. The young troubador utilized a song from The Wailers confirming his rich influence in style. The buzz outside the Bluebird Theater was humming and the one thing mentioned that everybody was talking about was Mr. Dennen’s smooth style and the one song everyone hoped to hear, and current chart topper, was “Make you crazy”. The ambiance was warm and welcoming with a stage set up made for a young hippie in love. It consisted of comfortable Persian rugs, brightly lit candles (the ones you light for prayer), sweet incensense, spacious positions for each of the four members and a simple white striped stuffed tiger resting atop of a speaker. As the bass revved up the room and the temperature rose there was not one conversation to be had while everyone awaited his move. The playful sing-a-long song “Blessed” pulled guitar and heart strings alike and reminded one of how simple songs can be. As the night continued thoughts of absent minded chaos was forgotten as the music took hold of your head. The song “Make you crazy” confirms that we may need to be a little more crazy about life and love “It’s a shame the way we treat each other, treat each other, need each other……..its enough to make you go crazy..” and desire for one another. By the middle of the song Dennen encouraged singing along with the chorus. Other songs consisted of lyrics intended for young lovers, being kind to the world and mostly to yourself. According to Dennen, it would make the world a better place by shouting “I love myself” which he demanded everyone do on the spot. Willingly everyone obliged. He produced such a beautiful energy that seeped in whether you liked it or not. To orchestrate a playful mood in times such as these says a lot about an artist. Dennen and his band truly believe in their music which can only leave room for the rest of us to believe as well.
