Golden Compass

This movie has been greeted by a lot of negative press for its anti-religious undertones. The future trilogy is described as the anti-parallel to the Chronicles of Narnia. The movie was fairly graphic, especially for a movie that I thought was being marketed for a younger audience. There are plenty of metaphors in the movie, namely the antagonist of the movie being one for the Catholic Church. The part played by Nicole Kidman was one that was forgettable, although the lead character , Lyra (for which the end movie credits song title by Kate Bush is a slow number, beautiful) is the show stealer. Her role is played by a headstrong 10 year old that is poised to save her father Daniel Craig. Sam Elliot comes out of left field, and he plays a gun toting pilot of sorts. His dialog is hysterical, souther draw and all. I was most impressed that Chris Weitz from American Pie fame had a hand in the movie. As for box office standards, it’s first week returns are considered meager, despite coming in at #1. I would wait for this to come out on the telly, thank God it was only a free screening.
