Jay Bennett R.I.P.

It is with a heavy heart that I post this, but this source (and the rumour mill here as well) have confirmed the death of Jay Bennett. According to the report, it states that Bennett died in his sleep. The documentary, I’m Trying to Break Your Heart, did no justice for him and made him out to be a neurotic crazy unable to mend a working  relationship with Jeff Tweedy.  You can download his appropriately titled new album, Whatever Happened I Apologized, here.

Marilyn Chambers R.I.P.

CNN is reporting that porn-legend, Marilyn Chambers has passed away at the age of 56 at her Canyon Country home.  She was best known for her work in the Adult Film Industry and a form vice presidential nominee. The cause of death at the moment is unknown. Her work was well respected by my uncles and stepfather, who in turn passed their knowledge of skin flicks to me. My knowledge of the porn industry came into play when I witnessed my first porn movie with a very young Traci Lords, titled, Deep Inside Traci. What a magical summer that was. I was in the sixth-grade and we watched it at my friend’s house that never had any parental supervision. He had an uncle that was still living at home (token stoner uncle) working for a stereo store that had tons of porn flicks that littered his room.

Hot IQ’s R.I.P.

DSCN1486

Every week, I get an email notifying me of upcoming concerts and one in particular read, “Hot IQ’s last Bluebird Show”. I thought it was kind of sketch, but didn’t decide to delve any deeper. Westword is reporting that group is dunzo. The trio was a fixture in the Denver scene and will be greatly missed. From the article, it seems as though they still have some creative chops left, so look for them in another group, solo act, or some kind of incarnation.

R.I.P. Vizco Enriquez 2007-2008

My cat Vizco (for those that don’t speak English, vizco meas cross eyed) died last night. It came as a shock to everybody for nobody knew what was going on. He was yelping as if he wanted dinner, but it turned out to be something else. The vet said it was either toxic or leukemia, for he was in the third and most traumatic stage of shock. It was pointless to keep him in his misery so we did the humane thing and I can be happy knowing that he died with his family by his side. In the short time we had him, he was an immediate part of our family and he will be greatly missed. He followed commands and laid on his back like a human so that we could rub his belly. Not to get all Hallmark channel or anything, but the house doesn’t feel the same. When I would put out my shoes for work the next day, Vizco would lay on them all the time. He will be missed. He is survived by his brother Picasso and family, Marisol, Erika, Christian, and Julio.

Don Haskins

1930-2008

I grew up in El Paso and the Bear was a permanent fixture. Don Haskins was the coach of the Texas Western/UTEP men’s basketball team and it is because of him that the face of sports would forever change after his 1966 team went on to defeat a heavily favored U. of Kentucky team in the NCAA Tournament. The Bear was one of a few sports figures we had in town to look up to in aside from Tim Hardaway, Tiny Archibald, and Lee Trevino. The El Paso Times has more info here. Don Haskins was 78.
